Old Windsor Cottage to Get a New Look with Plywood Extension

TDO, an interior designing studio based in London renovated a cottage in Windsor using plywood-framed extension. TDO designed a home for family with grown up children, who will live primarily in new built portion and then expand into old portion when every member comes home. The studio had to demolish previous additions in order to create space and refurbish the remaining part of the home. TDO was founded in the year 2010 by Tom Lewith, Owen Jones, and Doug Hodgson.

"We established the parts to be retained through map regression and old photos, as well as our own investigations on site," architect Tom Lewith told website dezeen.com. "The parts that ultimately remained were the original small single-storey cottage and the remaining brick wall of an old outbuilding associated with it.

A new-build element offset using two boxes was designed from existing cottage. Most of the accommodation of property, such as master suite, living room, kitchen, dining room, and others was built within this area. The new master bedroom was built by incorporating wall of outbuilding for connecting old property and newly added space.

"Our client was keen on our idea of retaining the architecturally relevant parts of the site, removing the rest and introducing the new-build part sympathetically to ensure an evolution on the site," said Lewith. "We treated that connection between the old wall and the new building quite carefully with a cast in-situ, curved concrete cill externally and a steamed, curved plywood cill internally, both aligning the window with the original curve in the wall."

The newly added space comprises of two-third of total floor area. As per the new design, kitchen faces up to the entrance courtyard, the living space is behind the main garden, while master suite faces up to a private terrace. Architects have used material and finishing throughout the interior of house in order to differentiate between new and old. Plywood is used to frame a series of floor-to-ceiling glazed panels. TDO used plywood more frequently due to its affordability and versatility.

In another news, Trojan Plywood, a leading interior solution provider, has launched a Life Time Guarantee card for its plywood products. Mohammed Arabi K, chairman of MAK Group of companies said that this scheme provides lifetime a limited guarantee with replacement of plywood products. Commenting on expansion plan of the firm, he added that Trojan Plywood is a major player in the South Indian Market with a substantial strength in Kerala.

''We have a very strong sales and distribution network in the state and we plan to double our volumes in over the next 18-24 months,'' he said. MAK Group is a parent organization of Trojan Plywood, which manufactures a range of plywood in manufacturing facilities at Coimbatore, Mangalore, and Myanmar.
